SUMMARY:All Hallows Eve Service
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Hallows Eve Service\n\n\n\n(Based on The Book of Uncommon Prayer, by Steven L. Case)\n\n\n\nIntroduction to the Service and Instructions to Participants at Home                                                                                                                                     M. Quinn\n\n\n\nOpening Prayer                                                                 The Rev. Elizabeth Ewing\n\n\n\nGod, we gather in this place on this night to remember. We remember the words of your son when he said, “I am the resurrection and the life. If you believe in me, you will never die but have eternal life.” Many of us have had someone close to us go home to be with you, God. We are selfish to want them here with us instead of with you. Watch over us here, God. It’s only a matter of time before we’re all together again in your arms. Guide us now as we come into our presence. Amen.\n\n\n\nJob 4:12 – 21                                                                                                     D. Rasey \n\n\n\n12 ‘Now a word came stealing to me,\n\n\n\nmy ear received the whisper of it.\n\n\n\n13 Amid thoughts from visions of the night,\n\n\n\nwhen deep sleep falls on mortals,\n\n\n\n14 dread came upon me, and trembling,\n\n\n\nwhich made all my bones shake.\n\n\n\n15 A spirit glided past my face;\n\n\n\nthe hair of my flesh bristled.\n\n\n\n16 It stood still,\n\n\n\nbut I could not discern its appearance.\n\n\n\nA form was before my eyes;\n\n\n\nthere was silence, then I heard a voice:\n\n\n\n17 “Can mortals be righteous before* God?\n\n\n\nCan human beings be pure before* their Maker?\n\n\n\n18 Even in his servants he puts no trust,\n\n\n\nand his angels he charges with error;\n\n\n\n19 how much more those who live in houses of clay,\n\n\n\nwhose foundation is in the dust,\n\n\n\nwho are crushed like a moth.\n\n\n\n20 Between morning and evening they are destroyed;\n\n\n\nthey perish for ever without any regarding it.\n\n\n\n21 Their tent-cord is plucked up within them,\n\n\n\nand they die devoid of wisdom.”\n\n\n\nPsalm 4 (Book of Common Prayer Page 587)                                      L. Davis \n\n\n\n1Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; *\n\n\n\nyou set me free when I am hard-pressed;\n\n\n\nhave mercy on me and hear my prayer.\n\n\n\n2 “You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory; *\n\n\n\nhow long will you worship dumb idols\n\n\n\nand run after false gods?”\n\n\n\n3 Know that the LORD does wonders for the faithful; *\n\n\n\nwhen I call upon the LORD, he will hear me.\n\n\n\n4 Tremble, then, and do not sin; *\n\n\n\nspeak to your heart in silence upon your bed.\n\n\n\n5 Offer the appointed sacrifices *\n\n\n\nand put your trust in the LORD.\n\n\n\n6 Many are saying,\n\n\n\n  “Oh, that we might see better times!” *\n\n\n\nLift up the light of your countenance upon us, O LORD.\n\n\n\n7 You have put gladness in my heart, *\n\n\n\nmore than when grain and wine and oil increase.\n\n\n\n8 I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; *\n\n\n\nfor only you, LORD, make me dwell in safety.\n\n\n\nSamuel 28:3-25                                                     B. Snyder – Through Verse 10\n\n\n\nM. Quinn – Though Verse 19\n\n\n\n  Both Conclude \n\n\n\n3 Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. Saul had expelled the mediums and the wizards from the land.\n\n\n\n4 The Philistines assembled, and came and encamped at Shunem. Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa.\n\n\n\n5 When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly.\n\n\n\n6 When Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, not by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.\n\n\n\n7 Then Saul said to his servants, ‘Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and inquire of her.’ His servants said to him, ‘There is a medium at Endor.’\n\n\n\n8 So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes and went there, he and two men with him. They came to the woman by night. And he said, ‘Consult a spirit for me, and bring up for me the one whom I name to you.’\n\n\n\n9 The woman said to him, ‘Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the wizards from the land. Why then are you laying a snare for my life to bring about my death?’\n\n\n\n10 But Saul swore to her by the Lord, ‘As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.’\n\n\n\n11 Then the woman said, ‘Whom shall I bring up for you?’ He answered, ‘Bring up Samuel for me.’\n\n\n\n12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman said to Saul, ‘Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!’\n\n\n\n13 The king said to her, ‘Have no fear; what do you see?’ The woman said to Saul, ‘I see a divine being* coming up out of the ground.’\n\n\n\n14 He said to her, ‘What is his appearance?’ She said, ‘An old man is coming up; he is wrapped in a robe.’ So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and did obeisance.\n\n\n\n15 Then Samuel said to Saul, ‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?’ Saul answered, ‘I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams; so I have summoned you to tell me what I should do.’\n\n\n\n16 Samuel said, ‘Why then do you ask me, since the Lord has turned from you and become your enemy?\n\n\n\n17 The Lord has done to you just as he spoke by me; for the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbour David.\n\n\n\n18 Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord, and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you today.\n\n\n\n19 Moreover, the Lord will give Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me; the Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.’\n\n\n\n20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night.\n\n\n\n21 The woman came to Saul, and when she saw that he was terrified, she said to him, ‘Your servant has listened to you; I have taken my life in my hand, and have listened to what you have said to me.\n\n\n\n22 Now therefore, you also listen to your servant; let me set a morsel of bread before you. Eat, that you may have strength when you go on your way.’\n\n\n\n23 He refused, and said, ‘I will not eat.’ But his servants, together with the woman, urged him; and he listened to their words. So he got up from the ground and sat on the bed.\n\n\n\n24 Now the woman had a fatted calf in the house. She quickly slaughtered it, and she took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened cakes.\n\n\n\n25 She put them before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they rose and went away that night.\n\n\n\nPsalm 23 (Book of Common Prayer Page 612)                                    T. Davis\n\n\n\n1 LORD is my shepherd; *\n\n\n\nI shall not be in want.\n\n\n\n2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *\n\n\n\nand leads me beside still waters.\n\n\n\n3 He revives my soul *\n\n\n\nand guides me along right pathways for his Name’s sake.\n\n\n\n4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,\n\n\n\n  I shall fear no evil; *\n\n\n\nfor you are with me;\n\n\n\nyour rod and your staff, they comfort me.\n\n\n\n5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those\n\n\n\n  who trouble me; *\n\n\n\nyou have anointed my head with oil,\n\n\n\nand my cup is running over.\n\n\n\n6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days\n\n\n\n  of my life, *\n\n\n\nand I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.\n\n\n\nLighting Candles                                                                      R.Steflik on Keyboard\n\n\n\nThe candle lighting should be done in silence. Ask each participant to think about a departed loved one. You can send “lighters into the congregation, or you can start one flame and allow it to be passed along until everyone has a light.\n\n\n\nEzekiel 37:1 – 14                                                                                              M.Smith \n\n\n\nThe hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.\n\n\n\n2 He led me all round them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry.\n\n\n\n3 He said to me, ‘Mortal, can these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord God, you know.’\n\n\n\n4 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.\n\n\n\n5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath* to enter you, and you shall live.\n\n\n\n6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath* in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.’\n\n\n\n7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone.\n\n\n\n8 I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them.\n\n\n\n9 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath:* Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath,* and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’\n\n\n\n10 I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.\n\n\n\n11 Then he said to me, ‘Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.”\n\n\n\n12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel.\n\n\n\n13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people.\n\n\n\n14 I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord.’\n\n\n\nPsalm 143:1 – 12 (Book of Common Prayer Page 798)\n\n\n\n                                                                 The Rev. Deacon Kay Drebert\n\n\n\n1 LORD, hear my prayer,\n\n\n\nand in your faithfulness heed my supplications; *\n\n\n\nanswer me in your righteousness.\n\n\n\n2 Enter not into judgment with your servant, *\n\n\n\nfor in your sight shall no one living be justified.\n\n\n\n3 For my enemy has sought my life;\n\n\n\nhe has crushed me to the ground; *\n\n\n\nhe has made me live in dark places like those who\n\n\n\nare long dead.\n\n\n\n4 My spirit faints within me; *\n\n\n\nmy heart within me is desolate.\n\n\n\n5 I remember the time past;\n\n\n\n  I muse upon all your deeds; *\n\n\n\nI consider the works of your hands.\n\n\n\n6 I spread out my hands to you; *\n\n\n\nmy soul gasps to you like a thirsty land.\n\n\n\n7 O LORD, make haste to answer me; my spirit fails me; *\n\n\n\ndo not hide your face from me\n\n\n\nor I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.\n\n\n\n8 Let me hear of your loving-kindness in the morning,\n\n\n\n  for I put my trust in you; *\n\n\n\nshow me the road that I must walk,\n\n\n\nfor I lift up my soul to you.\n\n\n\n9 Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD, *\n\n\n\nfor I flee to you for refuge.\n\n\n\n10 Teach me to do what pleases you, for you are my God; *\n\n\n\nlet your good Spirit lead me on level ground.\n\n\n\n11 Revive me, O LORD, for your Name’s sake; *\n\n\n\nfor your righteousness’ sake, bring me out of trouble.\n\n\n\n12 Of your goodness, destroy my enemies\n\n\n\n   and bring all my foes to naught, *\n\n\n\nfor truly I am your servant.\n\n\n\nClosing Prayer\n\n\n\nI bind to myself Today                                                                                           M.
